Cheong Soo Pieng is considered a pioneer of Singaporean modern art, and the leader of the Nanyang style of art. The Nanyang style is pivotal in the history of Southeast Asian art, as it merged ideas and artistic concepts from the West and East together.
Soo Pieng's work reveals his exploration of the Western styles of Abstract Expressionism, Realism, and Cubism whilst still maintaining a uniquely Eastern aesthetic.
