Ethel Spowers studied drawing and painting at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School from 1911 to 1917. She later returned to London and by 1929 she studied linocut printmaking with Claude Flight at the Grosvenor School of Modern Art. It was here that her style changed dramatically showcasing a modernist movement and rhythm.
"Wet Afternoon" was exhibited in London in 1930, when impressions were acquired by the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Other examples of this print are held in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney.
