JESSIE TRAILL (1881-1967)
France 1925
watercolour
signed and dated lower right: JCA Traill/ 1925
45 x 31 cm

Estimate $1,500 - $2,000

Sold for $2,000

As well as practising as an artist, Traill joined the Voluntary Aid Detachment during World War I, and became one of the only Australian women artists to portray the war while in France. More recently, the National Gallery of Australia held a retrospective of her work, which can be credited to rediscovering an artist who was almost unknown to the public. Her great influence on Austarlian art is exemplified further in author and critic Sasha Grishin's review of the exhibition, concluding that the show "reasserts the supremacy of Jessie Traill as one of the great Australian artists of the 20th century".
