Glass prints were popular from the late seventeenth century to the early nineteenth century. They were produced by first adhering a mezzotint print face down to a sheet of glass with varnish. Then the verso of the print was abraded all over to a very thin layer. The altered support was then painted in from behind with watercolour or oil paint.

Another example of this glass print is housed in the Winterthur Museum Collection, Delaware, USA.
