Moët and Chandon Award, touring exhibition 1993

Mephisto, painted in 1993 was the artist's first large scale work and was a finalist in the Moët and Chandon Award. "I was grappling with the figurative language and used symbols to express the grandiose. I was working on the theme of male identity, a subject that has continued to be a part of my work. These figures are struggling and engaging in a rivalry. The mephisto is the character who is standing back - the one controlling and responsible." (Artist's Statement)
