Lot 15

A QUEENSLAND WALNUT DESK BY SCHULIM KRIMPER
1959–1960

The lightly-curved rectangular top raised on a pedestal of drawers to the left and a support of opposed crossed chevrons to the right, the pedestal with a shallow bookcase to its rear side, the relative angles of the top and pedestal adjustable (the top pivoting on the pedestal)
76cm high, 174cm wide (with top and pedestal aligned straight), 84cm deep

Estimate $10,000 - $15,000

Sold for $11,000

Generally in good condition but showing use-related wear. The varnish to the top is worn overall but to various degrees in different areas, also with some very slight variations in colour, possibly caused by variations in light-fading. A few darker marks to the top appear to be stains.

There are chip losses to the veneer at the right-hand ends of the upper two drawers which have been partly filled and covered with some type of filler of mismatching colour; also some wear and scuffs to the veneer around the lower edge of the pedestal.

The top of the desk rests and pivots on a cylindrical brass pillar (of which two spares are present). A bolt fixed to the underside of the top passes down through the pillar and through a hole in the top of the pedestal. Presumably, there should be a nut at the base of the bolt, tightened against the underside of the top of the pedestal (accessible via the upper drawer space), to keep the connection through the pillar reasonably tight and firm. This nut is lacking, causing the top of the desk to be unstable when weight is applied to its long sides.
