A CHINESE GE-TYPE VASE, FANGHU, QIANLONG SIX-CHARACTER SEAL MARK AND POSSIBLY OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795)
Of rectangular section, the vase is robustly potted in an archaic hu form, with peach-shaped panels to the front and back and a pair of rectangular tubular handles at the neck. The canted rim and neck are covered in a thick grey glaze with dark crackle.
Archaism, a defining feature of Qing dynasty craftsmanship, is expressed here in both form and glaze: the hu shape derives from Shang and Zhou bronzes, while the glaze imitates Southern Song imperial Ge ware. A related Song prototype, a small Guan vase with canted corners in the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., is illustrated in Oriental Ceramics, Kodansha Series, vol. 9, Japan, 1987, no. 960. Comparable examples have appeared at auction, including Bonhams Los Angeles, 16–25 June 2025, lot 34; Bonhams San Francisco, 11 December 2012, lot 8064; and Christie's Hong Kong, 30 November 2011, lot 3321, and 3 June 2015, lot 3248.
