Lot 43

A RARE CHINESE PARTIAL-GILT REPOUSSE BRONZE VASE, TOUHU, YONGZHENG MARK, QING DYNASTY (1644 - 1911)
As noted in the Book of Rites (Liji), pitch-pot (touhu) is a refined form of archery, derived from pre-Qin ritual practice and later adapted as a banquet game to entertain guests while retaining the moral and ceremonial aspects of archery rites.

The present vessel is an archaistic example of cylindrical form, with a straight mouth and a pair of smaller tubular side openings. The body is full and rounded, set with loop handles and raised on a tall foot. The dark bronze surface is partially gilt with finely detailed dragon motifs.

Well cast and proportioned, the vessel conveys a sense of dignity and balance, successfully evoking the form and spirit of ancient ritual bronzes.

A closely comparable bronze touhu vessel, a non-gilt example, is preserved in the Beijing Palace Museum (museum no. gu00177798).
