Lot 26

Jean COCTEAU (1889–1963)
'Orphée'
Coloured crayon
Signed and dated lower left: Jean Cocteau / * 53
50 x 48cm

Estimate $4,000 - $6,000

Sold for $8,000

The work is framed behind glass and has not been examined out of the frame in preparing this report, although with it being framed without a window mount, its recto is fully visible.

The crayon work and signature are well preserved, not rubbed.

Apart from the upper left corner which remains more white in tone (as visible in the catalogue photo), the sheet is uniformly very lightly toned throughout. There are a few small and very faint and unobtrusive spots scattered across the sheet but it is otherwise very clean.

The work is housed in a simple gilt moulding frame which has come apart at the mitres; there are a few scrapes to its gilding.

The opinions expressed in the condition reports are a guide only and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Please note condition reports can be amended during the pre-sale period, so we strongly suggest any interested bidders check the published condition report available on the website before the auction commences.
