John Opie was a prominent British painter known for his historical and portrait work. He was born in Cornwall and became known as "The Cornish Wonder" due to his self-taught talent for painting, particularly in the chiaroscuro technique reminiscent of Rembrandt. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1787 and later became Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy.

James Bourlet & Sons was a company known for its expertise in fine art packing, framing, and related services. Founded by James Bourlet (c. 1828 - 1895), the company operated as carvers and gilders, picture framemakers, fine art packers, exhibition agents, and picture cleaners. The company was established in London and became well-regarded for its work with prominent galleries and collectors. The label verso reads: James Bourlet & Sons, Ltd / Fine Art Packers, Frame Makers / 72566 / 17 & 18 NASSAU STREET, / MORTIMER STREET W. / MUSEUM 1871
