This composition was originally painted by Veronese for the Pala di San Zaccaria when it was restored in 1562, and is now housed in the collection of the Gallerie Accademia, Venice. It is a fine example of his early works with harmonious richness of colour. The young John the Baptist stands at the meeting point of the two compositional diagonals formed by the figures of St. Joseph, St. Francis and St. Jerome, who are invested with a look of detached spirituality. The colour is made vibrant by a continual juxtaposition of light and dark tones.
