with implement compartment, red velvet lined writing surface with name stencilled twice to underside 'E. Bell', some damage; a Hymn book with similar stencils; and two letters dated 1863, unrelated to Bell; with research material on Bell including a biography and copies of his army and pension files (a lot)


OTHER NOTES
Edward Bell joined the 5th N.Y. on 24 April, 1861, aged 27 years. He was made Corporal on 9 May, 1861 and 1st Sgt. in June. He was acting Lt. when was wounded in the knee at Big Bethel, Va. on 10 June, 1861. This was the first land battle of the Civil War making Bell one of the very first casualties. . He was promoted to 2nd Lt. on 15 August, 1861 but was forced to resign because of his wounds on 20 February, 1862. He died shortly after.

The 5th N.Y Regt. or Duryee's Zouaves were a colourful and highly drilled regiment that became one of the most renowned fighting units in the Civil War.
