Badimaya artist Julie Dowling has drawn on a wide range of cultural and historical influences throughout her career, however portraiture is her most frequented and a genre not usually embraced by Indigenous artists.
Her earliest icon-like images were strongly influenced by renaissance religious paintings adapted to convey the cultural implications and impact of her grandmother's removal from her family as a member of the stolen generation.
