A SILVER HORIZONTAL SUNDIAL-COMPASS
MICHAEL BUTTERFIELD, EARLY 18TH CENTURY

Elongated octagonal, inset with a circular compass, the dial chapter includes four sets of engraved scales alternating in Roman & Arabic numeral made for latitudes, with a folding bird gnomon engraved for latitudes 40-60, engraved underneath with tables of latitudes for 32 cities, signed 'Butterfield A Paris to front, housed in small portable leather case, 6.5 x 6cm

Note: Michael Butterfield (1635-1724) was a British clockmaker who relocated to Paris in the 1660s; here he retailed precision instruments which attracted nobility from around the world such as Russia's Tzar Peter the Great. Butterfield later was appointed engineer to the King of France.
