Iskander Muda (1607-1636) was the twelfth Sultan of Aceh and one of the most significant. He expanded the sultanate's territory and during his tenure, Aceh became an important international Islamic centre for learning and trade. Alauddin al Qahhar (1537-1568) sacked Johor and brought its sultan to Aceh where he was then killed. He also led campaigns against the Batak people who refused to convert to Islam.
