THREE SOUTHERN CHINESE MIAO BABY CARRIERS
20TH CENTURY

Consisting of three pieces, one with intricate embroidery and appliqué work, the cloud form appliqué further embellished with beaded tassels. Another with intricate geometric embroidery. the last of batik indigo further decorated with diamond shaped embroidered panels and weft brocade straps.

The applique carrier 60cm high, 61cm wide. The other largest carrier panel 94cm high, 63cm wide.

The embroidered applique baby carrier panel with no visible flaws or damage. The edge material is possibly of later date, having been used to finish the piece after the original straps were removed. The batik applique baby carrier panel has some very light staining in some areas of the white ground of the batik, otherwise no further visible faults or damage. The embroidered baby carrier panel has some minor wear to the purple satin edging, and the sides where the straps would have originally extended from show evidence of having been cut, otherwise no further visible faults or damage.
