Lot 22
Still Life with Game c.1880s
oil on canvas laid on panel
signed lower left: TOM ROBERTS
19.5 x 38.5cm
Estimate $10,000 - $20,000
The painting is in good condition. The pigment appears very stable, with a recent varnish apparent. There are signs of minor cracking, likely prior to varnish and so these are stable.
Under UV light there are signs of restoration mostly across the leaves in the upper centre, and in minor spots across the birds.

Still Life with Pomegranates was originally owned by Fanny Burchill (Roberts' sister-in-law) who stated that it was a school work he painted whilst in London. Still Life with Game displays a similar academic emphasis on chiaroscuro and rendering of three-dimensionality.
