Lot 103
Portrait of a Woman in a Dark Hat c.1908
oil on canvas
signed and dated upper right: J. Muir Auld / 190_
55 x 44cm
Estimate $1,500 - $2,000
The painting is in fair condition consistent with age. There is substantial blooming on the painting's surface, and light craquelure throughout, although the pigment appears stabilised. There are minor white pigment spots on the surface, likely foreign, and whitened surface lines near the neck of the subject. There are very minor pigment losses visible, mostly on the right hand side.
Under UV light, there is evidence of infill from previous losses although only small (approx. 3mm each). The surface of the painting also flouresces a murky green indicating an old varnish that has become unclean.
The frame is in overall good condition.
