A JAPANESE KUTANI TOKUDA YASOKICHI STUDIO VASE
TOKUDA YASOKICHI III (1933-2009), CIRCA 1980s

The globular vase with a very long neck covered in three coloured glazes, aubergine, yellow and blue which each blend/transition into the next, the technique for which he gained 'Living National Treasure' status. Signed 'Kutani Masahiko' in iron red to the base within the footrim.

Tokuda Yasokichi III was awarded Living National Treasure status in Japan in 1997 for his 'saiyu' glaze technique, which was based on the modernisation of coloured glazes for which Kutani was famous. Amongst many other awards, he received the Grand Prize in The International Pottery and Porcelain Exhibition, 1990, and the Purple Ribbon presented by the Emperor of Japan in 1993.
