19TH CENTURY, LEONARD JOEL LOCAL DELIVERY SIZE: SMALL

A smear glaze tobacco jar and cover, modelled as a toga-clad monkey bearing a lantern, standing in front of Diogene's barrel, labelled 'DIOGENE'. All above a turning oval base impressed with the numbered 352 and the phrase 'Je cherghe un singe?', along with the letter T.

Diogene's was a Greek philosopher, who was well known for his philosophical stunts, which including carrying a lamp during daylight, claiming he was in search of an honest man, during the evenings he often slept in a large ceramic jar, as depicted in this example.
