AN IMPORTANT IMPERIALLY INSCRIBED CHINESE SILVER AND GOLD EMBELLISHED ZITAN AND LACQUER INKSTONE BOX
QIANLONG MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1735-1796)

Of lobed hexagonal form, with exceptional shallow relief carving of four archaistic taotie masks surrounding a flat square reserve containing a poem by the Qianlong Emperor inlaid in silver and with a square inlaid gold seal to the lower left hand corner in seal script, the whole surrounded by a keyfret border. The sides of the box decorated in shallow relief carving with an archaistic taotie mask and scrolling clouds to each side. The inner surface of the lid decorated in thick black lacquer with the Taoist trigram 'Qian' surrounded by two stylized dragons within a circle carved in intaglio to the centre, decorated with gilding inside the intaglio carving.

very small slither of wood lost on top edge. one side of the lid with a vertical crack showing of the inside of the lacquer with an associated horizontial crack across one side of the box, showing on both the outer surface and inner surface with an associated small area of lacquer repair to the inner surface of the lid. to one other area a small crack with associated hairline crack to lacquer. some wear to the gilding in the Qian symbol. A chip to the inner rim of the base. General small signs of wear throughout
