Newcombe's work on paper is mesmerising, embodying a sense of explosive, yet ordered, rhythm, the fluid dashes of colour forming a pulsing layer over the surface.
Kristie Newcombe is an emerging artist who joined Arts Project Australia in 2020. Her first works are 'abstract test pieces' and present brightly coloured compositions of beautifully executed linework in felt-tipped marker on paper. There is the illusion of movement on the page, which she creates by applying many colourful groups of lines to that paper that shift orientation. In doing so, she generates directional patterns that lead the viewer's eye fluidly through the composition, almost like catching a still image of a school of fish mid-motion.
