Printmaking in the 1930s was at its peak, Murray Griffin had gained recognition as one of Melbourne's most innovative modernist printmakers. Like many printmakers of this time, Griffin was influenced by the multi-block techniques and the delicate line and colour use reminiscent of Japanese prints. His subjects included landscapes, figurative and animals, however he became especially known for his prints of birds. In 1934, the artist held a solo exhibition at Sedon Galleries which was attended by (Sir) Arthur Streeton, who went on to describe Griffin's prints as ‘masterpieces of colour and form' and that Griffin ‘stands in a high place of his own making'.
