Lot 104A
19TH CENTURY
Of rectangular form, in two sections, the upper section with two short drawers and one long drawer, the bottom section with two long drawers. The whole, brass bound with matching hardware, raised on four turned feet.
110cm high, 99cm wide, 46cm deep
Estimate $2,000 - $3,000
The chest is mahogany (not cedar as previously catalogued) and the drawer linings are European oak, suggesting the chest is British made; overall very good condition showing little wear relative to age and use; there is a larger scuff to the left side, otherwise only scattered light knocks and superficial blemishes including to the edges of drawer fronts and to the sides where the edges of the upper and lower sections meet; wear to their runners has caused one or two of the drawers to sit slightly low leaving a slight gap above the drawer front (most noticeably above the first long drawer); to the left side of the upper section, the inset brass strap to the lower rear corner has been dented and has lifted a little out of its rebate; all feet appear to be original and screw in and out easily.
The opinions expressed in the condition reports are a guide only and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Prospective buyers are encouraged to book a virtual viewing or request further images during our pre-sale period where Leonard Joel staff are available for advice.
Please note condition reports can be amended during the pre-sale period, so we strongly suggest any interested bidders check the published condition report available on the website before the auction commences. Leonard Joel makes no guarantee of the originality of mechanical or applied components. Absence of reference to such modifications does not imply that a lot is free from modifications.
Campaign chests can be identified by their distinct stylistic attributes, including brass bindings, and are traditionally made in two sections so as to be easily transported during military campaigns prior to motorised transport.
