Private collection, Sydney
These two paintings depict the development of the love affair between the artist Filippo Lippi and Lucrezia Buti. Buti was a nun at the monastery of Santa Margherita in Prato where, in 1456, Lippi was commissioned to complete a painting for the high altar. After having used her as the model for his Madonna it is said that they fell in love and he stole her away, bringing her to his home in Florence where they remained and would go on to have two children. In the scene with Lippi on his knees one can see to the right his famed painting of the Madonna currently held in the collection of the Uffizi gallery.
