etching, edition unknown
5 x 27.5cm

Estimate $2,000 - $3,000

Unsold

The Estate of Jim Alexander

It is unknown to where the location is set within this etching by Jessie Traill. However, it looks to be an early work by the artist and possibly from when she first travelled to Java in 1911.
Traill described the trip in her travel diary, 'Five days steam from Port Darwin (our last Australian point of call) brought us to the delightful island of Java … For days we passed islands only visible as mountain peaks showing out above a bank of clouds. Now as we near Java itself the sails of native fishing boats are dotted on the water, and then we see the ships lying in the harbour of Soerabaya (Surabaya) each surrounded by a crowd of quaint barges and lighters, and we take our place amongst them.'(1)
