The clock was made in 1989 for the 150th anniversary of the brand L'Epée 1839. Gustave Courbet is from Ornans in France, which is not far from the original location of the brand's manufacture in Sainte-Suzanne. The clock was a tribute to Gustave Courbet who was likely friends with L'Epée 1839's founder Auguste L'Epée.
