Lot 280
The design draws inspiration from an ancient legend: it is said that when Confucius was born, a qilin appeared at his family home and presented a jade scroll, thus establishing the motif of the "Qilin Bearing the Book" (qilin bei shu) as a symbol of auspiciousness and the birth of a sage. Compare to a smaller example, see Christie's Hong Kong, 29/5/2019, lot 2907.
It's with an original carved fitted hongmu stand.
20cm wide; 15.8cm high
Estimate $20,000 - $30,000
