Edo Period, 18th century, the six-panel folding screens featuring 7th century Tang Chinese Kyuraku-zu, lit. Pictures of Pleasures at Court - a broad term referring to paintings of Chinese court ladies, often accompanied by emperors, set against palace architecture. Ink, colour and gold leaf on paper with brocade of a repeating phoenix motif in embroidered silk. The right screen of Emperor (possibly Xuanzong (685-762) seated in a pavilion and watching noblewomen admire cherry blossoms; the left screen depicting an Empress and her consorts watching Furyujin (Elegant Battles), court ladies fencing with flower bouquets as other courtiers look on from a distance. Unsigned.

Overall both screens with wear consistent with age and use, some small repairs and refreshments particularly to folds, some rubbing to hinged sections, minor cracking and discoloration to gold leaf in sections. Paper cover to reverse damaged and worn in places.
