A WILLIAM & MARY SEAWEED MARQUETRY LONGCASE CLOCK
The movement by Richard Baker, London, having a silver chapter ring with Roman hours and Arabic minutes, subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, gilt cherub spandrels, the hood with marquetry cornice and fretwork frieze, spiral twist columns flanking the dial, the trunk door with glazed aperture, inlaid throughout with seaweed marquetry panels and kingwood and oyster veneered panels.

Hood- in reasonably good original condition with acceptable wear, dirt and cracking to veneers; fretwork panel to frieze with some cracking and losses to elements; small amounts of damage/loss to top corners and lower right corner.

Dial- In good condition

Trunk- in reasonably good original condition with acceptable wear, dirt and cracking to veneers throughout, losses to top left moulding, oyster veneer top right corner, cross-banding to left hand edge and right hand side, possible replaced pieces to moulding on lower right hand corner; bottom edge obscured with later mahogany moulded plinth

Baker, Richard. Free of the Clockmakers' Company 1685, d.1700. Apprenticed to John Chatfield through the Blacksmiths' Company, then transferred in 1683 to Richard Browne, clockmaker. Made a freeman in the Clockmakers Company in June 1685 by redemption by order of the Lord Mayor. Died in 1700 but in 1710 his wife Jane is still recorded as carrying on the business and taking on an apprentice (see Brian Loomes The Early Clockmakers of Great Britain, NAG Press, 1981, p.66).
