Lot 18
A still-life of various vessels in a darkened interior
Oil on oak panel
Signed lower left: L. Mettling
35 x 23cm
Estimate $500 - $800
The panel is a little warped longitunally. An old vertical crack running full height down the left side (passing through the left side of the barrel) has been filled and (as revealed under UV light) retouched to the front side but remains visible. To the reverse of the panel, the crack is covered with old tape. The work is otherwise in good condition, with small points of retouching, mostly concentrated in two dark areas, one upper centre and the other lower left.
The work is housed in a mid-late nineteenth century moulded and gilt frame which is in reasonable condition with shrinkage gaps and cracks, minor losses, and later retouching with gold paint.
