Lot 20

Giovanni BOLDINI (1842–1931)
A three-quarter length portrait of a seated woman wearing a black dress
Oil on canvas
Signed upper left: Boldini

33.5 x 25.5cm

Estimate $6,000 - $9,000

Unsold

The work presents very well. The face of the sitter is finely executed while the rest of the work is more rapidly and loosely executed, in the manner of an oil sketch.

Inspection under natural and UV light indicates the work is generally in good condition consistent with age. Inspection under UV light reveals an area of repainting to the left and lower left side of the collar of the dress and a few small points of retouching elsewhere in the dress and in the background of the upper right quadrant. There might also be a small point of retouching to the sitter's right hand (which is very lightly sketched). The work to the collar is not apparent at normal viewing, nor most of the other points; the most apparent is the darker spot immediately to the right of the head.

The reverse of the canvas (which has not been relined) indicates no damage through the canvas, either corresponding with the points of retouching or elsewhere.

The signature upper left is light but discernible.

There is a fine craquelure to parts of the work and light impressions of the stretcher bars in the canvas, including of the central horizontal bar.

The work is housed in a carved and gilt Louis XV-style frame which is in good condition.
