Sebastião Salgado is widely celebrated for his immersive documentary practice, spending extended periods working alongside the communities he photographs. "Coal Mining, Dhanbad, India" forms part of his landmark "Workers" project from 1986–1992, a sweeping visual study of labour and industry across the globe. In Dhanbad, Salgado photographed miners enduring intense heat and physically demanding conditions in one of India's most hazardous coalfields.
