AN ANTIQUE FRENCH GILT BRONZE CHANDELIER
Second half 19th–early 20th century

Electricity Safety Act 1998: This electrical equipment may be faulty and should be inspected and tested by a competent person in accordance with AS/NZS 3760 before connection to electricity supply.
100cm high overall (including suspension ring to the top), 96cm diameter (approximately)

Estimate $1,200 - $2,000

Sold for $17,000

The date range for the chandelier may extend a little later than previously suggested (as now adjusted in the catalogue).

The chandelier presents very well. The gilding is generally very well preserved and clean, with some light wear on high points consistent with age and handling, and some light surface dirt and spots of oxidization.

There are a few minor defects to the casting of the stem, including slight fissures, some of which may be original to manufacture. There is no indication that any of these are unstable (all appear to be old) or affecting the structural integrity of the chandelier, nor are they visible at normal viewing with the chandelier suspended.

The chandelier appears to be in working order (all lights operate) but the condition of the electrical parts has not been assessed and should be inspected and tested by an electrician before connection to electricity supply.

(In preparing this condition report it has not been possible to closely inspect the uppermost parts of the chandelier but we do not believe there is any variation in condition at this level.)

The opinions expressed in the condition reports are a guide only and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Prospective buyers are encouraged to seek further information or request additional images during our pre-sale period where Leonard Joel staff are available for advice. Please note condition reports can be amended during the pre-sale period, so we strongly suggest any interested bidders check the published condition report available on the website before the auction commences. Leonard Joel makes no guarantee of the originality of mechanical or applied components. Absence of reference to such modifications does not imply that a lot is free from modifications.
