Lot 178

A SMALL ANTIQUE NORTH ITALIAN LACCA POVERA COMMODE
Second half 18th century

Of serpentine outline, the top with moulded edge above two drawers, raised on cabriole supports with shaped aprons, the top decorated to simulate marble, the front and sides with silhouetted engravings of figure subjects applied and varnished on the cream painted ground decorated with flowers and foliage
85cm high, 84cm wide, 50cm deep

Estimate $2,400 - $3,000

Sold for $5,500

Structurally sound and in good condition, with generally minor wear consistent with age and use.

There are scattered knocks and scuffs to the exterior, mostly to the mouldings and other edges and projecting points, and slight age-related shrinkage cracking to the gesso surface with some associated flake losses to this. The varnish has discoloured a little with age. The interiors of the drawers are lined with early (original?) patterned paper, which is stained and dirty.

It appears that fractures around the joints at the top of the right rear support have been repaired (not recently) with associated filling and retouching of the decoration in this area.
