Lot 182

A LARGE ANTIQUE LOUIS XVI-STYLE GILT-FRAMED MIRROR AND CONSOLE TABLE
Second half 19th century

The mirror with an oval main plate in a moulded frame with shell-centred open foliate crest and mounted to its lower sides with a pair of three-branch candle lights above marginal plates in the spandrels to the base, the mirror resting on the console of D-shaped outline, its marble top above a moulded frieze with centrepiece conforming with the mirror crest, raised on fluted tapering supports joined with low stretchers with urn and foliage centrepiece, the frames regilt
307cm high (overall; the mirror 224cm, the table 83cm), 183cm wide, 50cm deep

Estimate $1,700 - $2,200

Sold for $4,200

Please note that in the main catalogue photograph of this lot, the mirror plates are blurred and do not represent their actual appearance. The main oval plate has areas of degradation to its silvering, most prominently an area of clouding upper left. The subsidiary plates below have minor blemishes to the silvering.

The frames of the mirror and console have been regilded, evidently in recent decades.

Scattered throughout the mirror frame are various losses in the gesso to its carved parts and moulded details, previously repaired fractures, and shrinkage cracks.

The ebonised wood buffer to the underside of the mirror has a loss at its right end.

The marble top to the console, which might be original, is broken in two, the break running front to back at centre left. The edges of the break fit together quite neatly.

The console frame is in good condition, with only minor shrinkage cracking in the gesso consistent with age, and a couple of inconspicuous small losses to its feet.

(The back of the mirror and console, presently inaccessible, have not been inspected in preparing this report.)
