Lot 162

AN ANTIQUE NORTH AMERICAN BUFFALO HORN ARMCHAIR AND FOOT-STOOL
Texas, last quarter 19th century

The frame of the back and arms of the chair largely formed of steer horns on the hardwood-framed seat and supports, the padded back and armrests and upholstered seat in green fabric, the rectangular stool conforming
The chair 118cm high, 73cm wide, 70cm deep; the stool 39cm high, 39cm high, 53cm wide, 51cm deep

Estimate $1,800 - $2,400

Sold for $19,000

In good condition, consistent with manner of construction, age, and use; the upholstery in good, clean condition.

The chair and stool are both structurally sound but with some inherent movement in the back and arms of the chair owing to the design and manner of construction (the horns and other structural parts being joined to each other with one or two pins, not providing a very rigid overall frame).

To the right arm, there appears to be a fracture in the connection between the point of the horn forming the front of the arm and the cast metal fitting that connects this to the seat. This connection is presently wrapped in black plastic tape (as visible in the catalogue photos), which we have not removed.
