Lot 187
A portrait of a woman in a turban, traditionally identified as Beatrice Cenci
Oil on canvas
Apparently unsigned
61 x 49cm
Estimate $800 - $1,200
Inspection under natural and u.v. light indicates the work is generally in good condition excepting a few scattered small points of paint loss and small repairs with retouching. These repairs are mostly in the background area and lower parts of the drapery but there is one small area of retouched paint loss just outside the line of subject's chin and a small repair amidst the hair to the back of her neck. Some of these repairs are not as well blended as would be ideal and so are a little apparent at normal viewing (as visible in the catalogue photos).
Most of these repairs are backed with small patches to the reverse of the canvas (which has not been relined) but there is an unbacked crack in the canvas down the left side of the nose and other unbacked thin points scattered across the canvas.
The frame has a few age-related shrinkage cracks and occasional losses to its gilt gesso surface; otherwise in good condition.
