Lot 155
Second quarter 19th century
Of typical rectangular form, the top and all sides in burr musk on a kauri pine and cedar carcase, the top broadly cross-banded, the escutcheon and stringing to the edges in a contrasting lighter woods, the interior with a green baize-lined writing surface and typical arrangement of small compartments and a concealed pair of small drawers below
16cm high, 43cm wide, 23cm deep (closed)
Estimate $2,000 - $3,000
To the exterior are various minor shrinkage gaps and cracks in the veneer (most arising from its natural features), and scattered scratches, knocks, and slight losses.
There are three areas of old restoration (well-disguised filling of veneer losses) along the lower edge of the front, and smaller such restorations elsewhere to the exterior. The inlaid keyhole escutcheon may be a replacement.
The interior is generally in good condition, allowing for typical use-related wear; its green baize is later. There are shrinkage gaps and splits to the base boards, which are covered to the underside with later green baize.
The lock appears original and operates (with a key present).
