Lot 209

AN ANTIQUE GILT BRONZE-MOUNTED KINGWOOD AND ROSEWOOD COMMODE IN TRANSITIONAL LOUIS XV-STYLE
Late 19th–early 20th century

Of rounded break-front outline with outswept sides, the thick breccia pernice marble top above two drawers, on canted outswept feet, the front and sides geometrically veneered in fields within gilt bronze mouldings, with various other mounts of Classical design including ram's head drops to the front corners and lion's paw sabots to the feet
90cm high, 150cm wide, 67cm deep

Estimate $2,600 - $3,400

Sold for $6,000

The commode is probably a little later than previously described. It is now described as being of the late 19th century–early 20th century.

It is structurally sound and generally well presented consistent with age and use, noting the following points in particular.

There is a break across the left rear corner of the marble. The detached corner fits neatly in place (presently held in place with tape) but there are a small losses along the break. Apart from superficial scratches, the marble is otherwise in good condition.

The drawers sit very slightly misaligned.

There are a few scattered small veneer losses and other blemishes to the front and side.

The locks operate and a key is present for each. The lower drawer is lacking its keyhole escutcheon (apparently moved to sit behind the left-hand pull of the upper drawer, which presently has a keyhole escutcheon but with there never having been a lock in this position). All drawer pulls are loose as a consequence of wear to the wood around their shafts passing through the drawer fronts.

The left rear foot has an old crack across its inner side; this appears stable.
