Lot 59

A FINE AND RARE NEPALESE GILT-BRONZE SEATED VASUDHARA, 18TH/19TH CENTURY
The multi-armed goddess of wealth, Vasudhara, sits in a relaxed posture on a double lotus base with her spine elongated holding a dignified stature. The reverse of the lotus base inscribed with a line of Tibetan scripts "Chos dang 'byar bpung (?) rlung rta dar", translated as: "May the religion spread widely and may the prayer flag of auspiciousness spread in all regions".

Vasudhara's presence in Nepal arose from the impassioned worship of the goddess who promised both material wealth and spiritual prosperity. Her offerings included all-encompassing boons of fertility, abundance, wealth, and wisdom signified by the water pot, sheaf of corn, strand of jewels, and Prajanaparamita sutra held in each of her hands. Expressions of her popularity are evident from the numerous casts which apply this iconographic program including another 12th century example in (Kramrisch, The Art of Nepal, New York, 1964, pl. 15) and one dated to the 12th/13th century from the Zimmerman collection (Pal, Art of the Himalayas, New York, 1991, p. 48, pl 12).
