Arthur Streeton, Yorkshire Farm Yard 1910, oil on canvas, 49.5 x 60cm, Private collection
Streeton visited Yorkshire to paint in the early autumn of 1910. 'Its fine country up here, fine wild heights with the stone light grey cropping out', he wrote to Tom Roberts from Malham near Leeds in September, 'The weather much improved'. (1) He included pen and ink sketches in this letter to Roberts - one looking down on a farm house in the Yorkshire Dales and another of the rock face of Malham Cove. Streeton later completed a number of oil paintings of Yorkshire subjects which were well received both in Europe and back in Australia. There has been some confusion over the years between 'Yorkshire Farm House' and the slightly smaller 'Yorkshire Farmyard'. In his 1935 catalogue, Streeton lists the larger farmhouse as belonging to his son Oliver and the smaller work as in the collection of a Miss Michaelis.
