Lot 177

A RARE CHINESE RED AND BROWN LACQUER DISH, PAN, HAN DYNASTY (206 BCE - 220CE)
The dish is decorated in red and black with slender swirling cloud motifs reserved against a reddish-brown ground, set within a broad brick-red band below a band of lozenge pattern in the well. The narrow, flat rim and outer edge are finely painted in line with conjoined spirals and T-shaped motifs, while the upper register of the exterior is encircled by a band of long-tailed birds.

A dish of comparable form, sharing similar decorative motifs on the rim but with a different interior design, is illustrated by K. J. Brandt, Chinesische Lackarbeiten, Linden-Museum Stuttgart, 1988, no. 14, p. 55 (bottom). See also two similar dishes sold at Bonhams Hong Kong, 1–9 May 2025, lots 2004 and 2002; and a related pair sold at Christie's New York, 21 September 2000, lot 174.
