The Artist
The Collection of Sandra Le Brun Holmes
Thence by descent

Jimmy Mathaman was a Yolngu bark painter from Elcho Island, active during the 1960s. His work is securely documented through field records and photographs made by Sandra Le Brun Holmes, who collected his paintings directly during her visits to Elcho Island. His paintings reflect the shared visual language of Elcho Island artists of his generation, many of whom painted together and influenced one another's palettes and ceremonial subjects.
