Born in Bendigo, Marion Jones moved to Melbourne in 1912 to study at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School under Lindsay Bernard Hall. During these formative years, she developed a particular interest in portraiture and the figure, building a strong understanding of drawing, composition and the careful observation of her subjects.
Painted in 1912, this portrait dates to Jones's first year at the school and offers an early insight into her developing practice. There is already a quiet confidence in the work, particularly in the sitter's direct gaze and softly modelled features. Jones continued to distinguish herself throughout her studies, receiving numerous prizes before being awarded the National Gallery Travelling Scholarship in 1917.
