Mid-1830s, probably Sydney origin
A set of six dining or side chairs and a pair of elbow chairs of related design, the side chairs each with a curved toprail with carved floral patera centre between foliate terminals above the open back with moulded crossrail and drop-in seat in old brown grained leather, on turned supports to the front with mould roundels to their tops; the elbow chairs with toprails and backs matching the design of the side chairs above arms carved their full length to a foliate design and fixed upholstered seats, on turned supports to the front (the turning differing between the two chairs, neither exactly matching the side chairs)
The side chairs each 85cm high, 45cm wide, 50cm deep; the elbow chairs each 81cm high, 56cm wide, 54cm deep

An elbow chair, of NSW origin and dated circa 1830, with the same unusual and distinctive foliate carving to the arms as that on the present elbow chairs is illustrated in K. Fahy, C. Simpson, and A. Simpson, Nineteenth Century Australian Furniture (1985), p. 426, no. 292. A side chair, dated circa 1835 and attributed to Tasmania origin, of generally similar design and features to the present chairs is illustrated in K. Fahy and A. Simpson, Australian Furniture: Pictorial History and Dictionary 1788–1938 (1988), p. 258, no. 174.
