A CHINESE HUANGHUALI CHEST, QING DYNASTY, LATE 18TH CENTURY
Cabinets of this type, characterized by multiple drawers of uniform scale and the absence of enclosing doors, are uncommon. Constructed from highly prized huanghuali, they represent some of the most sophisticated forms of Ming and Qing furniture, combining exceptional utility with the aesthetic refinement associated with the finest hardwood furnishings.

Related examples have been published by Wang Shixiang, including an eighteen-drawer cabinet enclosed by a pair of doors (Connoisseurship of Chinese Furniture: Ming and Early Qing Dynasties, Hong Kong, 1990, no. E22) and another illustrated in Classical Chinese Furniture, Ming and Qing Dynasties (Hong Kong, 1986, no. 159). See also Robert Jacobsen, Classical Chinese Furniture in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (1999, no. 70), for a cabinet of comparable form and size.

Auction comparable examples include a similar huanghuali chest of thirty-two, see Sotheby's New York, 19/3/2007, lot 303. Also see, a larger twenty-eight-drawer huanghuali example from the Jingguantang Collection, sold at Christie's New York, 20 March 1997, lot 8, and again on 21 September 2004, lot 15, as well as a related cabinet from the Robert Hatfield Ellsworth Collection, sold at Sotheby's New York, 30 March 2006, lot 118.
