Lot 1

Louis BUVELOT (1814–1888)
'Album No. 1': A collection of nineteen sketches, mostly Australian and European landscapes
Variously pencil (most) and wash, some mounted on (now loose) album leaves
All unsigned

Three respectively inscribed with identifications of their subjects and dated: '1868 Nr Windsor Station', 'South Yarra 1866', and 'Lillydale 1871'

Three drawn on the reverse of printed membership cards of various Swiss organisations issued to Buvelot and his companion (and later wife), Caroline-Julie Béguin

Accompanied by a now-vacant circa 1880 album in which, apparently, at least some of the drawings were formerly mounted, inscribed on its first leaf 'Album No. 1', the final leaves of which are inscribed with a near-contemporary laudatory account of Buvelot's life and work; together with two 1880s portrait photographs of Buvelot, one a carte de visite by his own studio
The largest 16.5 x 26.5cm (the album 22 x 29.5cm)

Estimate $1,500 - $2,000

Sold for $1,500
