Lilian Chauvel studied in Queensland before travelling to Europe to further her artistic training. In Paris, she studied at the Académie Colarossi, later continuing her studies in London, where she exhibited at the Doré Gallery in Bond Street. On her return to Australia, Chauvel established a varied practice encompassing landscape, portraiture and still life, exhibiting regularly with the Queensland Art Society and the Society of Artists in Sydney.
Still life formed an important part of Chauvel's practice and provided her with a natural vehicle for the rich and assured use of colour for which she was recognised during her lifetime.
In 1910, Chauvel became a foundation member and honorary secretary of the Society of Women Painters in Sydney. Alongside her painting, she developed panchrocis, a distinctive method of painting on silk and satin, further reflecting the breadth of her artistic practice.
