TIN SHAKER CARRIED BY PTE. HENRY WITT CO. 'H' 147TH NEW YORK INFANTRY
probably used as a coffee shaker, fashioned from a metal condiment tin, with holes punched into the lid; with vendor's descriptive tag; and a four page letter written by Witt to his children dated 23 November, 1862, including a quaint drawing of a Civil War soldier feeding a mule (2)
Shaker 11.5cm high
PROVENANCE
Purchased by vendor from Jack Jacobsen in 1985.
OTHER NOTES
Coffee in the field was mostly issued in the form of beans. These were crushed using a musket stock or other suitable implement, to form a powder. The shaker would have been used to filter out any unwanted hard lumps.
Henry Witt was born in Unity, NH. in 1828. A cooper by trade, he married in 1848 and was father to two children. He joined Co. 'H' 147th NY Inf. on 10 August, 1862 and served as a cook and HQ guard. He was listed as missing after the Battle of the Wilderness on 5 May, 1864 and was a POW at Andersonville, until paroled on 27 February, 1865. Witt was discharged on 7 June, 1865. He died on 26 June, 1908, aged 80 years.
